<<Seems a long time to wait to restore freedom....>> You are impatient like most. Turning around a part of the world that has been living under dictatorships is not an over night job. It took 2 generations to abolish slavery here in the US. When everyone looks back at history, these years will mark the democratic reshaping of the Middle East. Freedom comes at a price. The democrats know that what is happening now is good for the world. Unfortunately, if they came out and said it, it would be political suicide. Then again, it's unfortunate that they found other means of political suicide by undermining the effort.
