Tom, peter, out. Yes, the story of this little thing the last few years.

Very timely use of the expression in our neck of the woods (wait, wait...): we were at a truck stop on our way north last Friday, and the paper placemats at the diner were chock full of these little interesting tidbits, such as the comparative depths and feet above (and below) sea level of each of the Great Lakes. One such squib was the origin of the term to "peter out", apparently referring to the exhaustion of a recoverable ore vein--the miners use of peter or saltpeter would out, meaning there was nothing left (worth going after).

Just googled it, and the francophile in you would probably already know the sense of "peter"--the literal whoosh from the rear, or figuratively to fritter away, like water through one's hands.

OT some more: apparently Sharon has had another stroke--serious this time and power has been passed.
