Dissimilarities between President-Generals Pervez Musharraf and Zia ul Haq are frequently mentioned. What two people could be more different than the cigar-sporting tuxedo-clad Musharraf — his Pekineses, Dot and Buddy, in tow, and the puritanical leader in the native sherwani? But the real difference lies not in the visually obvious, but in their ideological underpinnings. Understanding it requires a deeper investigation.

Notice the recent calls from several quarters for an Islamic renaissance and a tolerant view of the religion. This is an amazing advance. A renaissance requires the freedom to innovate and ‘think the unthinkable’. An infringement on the sovereignty of intellect precludes a renaissance. But does not a strategy of tolerance run contrary to the clerical insistence on ‘commanding virtue and forbidding vice’?
