I think what happened here was a pollster wanted to find a consensus favoring Bush's approach so he asked a broad question that people would be inclined to favor, leaving out the key condition that is really at the bottom of the whole thing. Then the headline is paraded that the public supports Bush's action.

Which the poll doesn't prove. And it's academic anyway since Bush doesn't care about consensus. He already decided what is right as commander in chief. He thinks the mere revelation and challenging of his actions are undermining our national security.

Imagine if the poll question had been phrased, should the president be allowed to do anything he thinks necessary when the nation faces a national security threat, notwithstanding our customary constitutional procedures and protections?

I bet the answer would have been different. That question is posed with an equally extreme bias to the Rasmussen approach. And it would draw your ire and Lucky's for its deliberate provocation, I imagine.

Scientists don't go into the lab and rig the experiments to get the right result, just to build consensus (at least they are not supposed to). Polling is more unwieldy but no less deserving of intellectual rigor, IMHO.
