Samsung Electronics Develops Prototype Of 256Mb P RAM

Seoul Korea - 09/20/05 - Samsung Electronics has developed a prototype of 256Mb phase-change RAM, or P RAM, the largest capacity RAM among next-generation memories.

Industry sources said Samsung Electronics could develop the prototype of 256Mb P RAM by reducing input power from current 1~2mA to 0.4mA. "We have made a dramatic achievement in P RAM technology, and we are now weighing timing for its announcement. We expect P RAMs to rapidly replace NOR flash memories in mobile gears," said Hwang Chang-gyu, CEO of semiconductor division at Samsung Electronics.

Industry observers anticipate that 256Mb P RAM of Samsung Electronics will vie with NOR flash memories in mobile phone market when it is commercialized, possibly in a year. A P RAM is a next-generation memory that adopted strong features of NAND flash and NOR flash memory.

They forecast that NOR flash memories and P RAMs will compete in megabit-level memories used for mobile phones after next year, while NAND flash memories will dominate the large capacity gigabit-level memory market.
