FONAR Installs 100th FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI Scanner; FONAR UPRIGHT MRI(TM) - 400,000 Patients Scanned - Nearly One Half Million Patients Thus Far Have Benefited From the FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI

January 05, 2006 07:00:04 (ET)

MELVILLE, N.Y., Jan 05, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- FONAR Corporation (FONR, Trade), The Inventor of MR Scanning(TM), announced today the completion of an installation of its FONAR(R) UPRIGHT(TM) MRI scanner at Central Florida Open MRI, an imaging center in Sebring, Florida. This installation, which was completed on December 29, 2005, marks the 100th Installation of the FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI. FONAR is the world's only manufacturer of this very unique MRI. It is the only whole-body MRI that performs Position(TM) imaging (pMRI) and scans patients in numerous weight-bearing positions, i.e. standing, sitting, in flexion and extension, as well as the conventional lie-down position.

Fabio Oliveros, M.D., an owner of the FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI at Central Florida Open MRI, said, "We are excited to be the 100th installation of the FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI. With almost one half million patients scanned by the FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI, it is clear the FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI is meeting a serious clinical need that cannot be addressed by any other technology. After having created the MRI industry in 1980 with the world's first commercial scanner, FONAR continues to be the pioneer and leader in MRI."

"We purchased the FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI because we want to be able to offer a higher level of service to our community," continued Dr. Oliveros. "The FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI does that for us. We can now scan the many patients that other MRIs can not scan, such as claustrophobic patients, young children without the need of anesthesia, overweight patients, and those who can not lie down. Most importantly, we can image our patients in various weigh-bearing positions, and therefore see pathology that is missed on standard recumbent-only MRIs. This differentiation between other MRIs and our new FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI will allow us to continue to be a leader in imaging in our community."

Raymond Damadian, president and founder of FONAR said, "We are happy for Dr. Oliveros's center to host the 100th installation of a FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI. Now that there are 100 FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI scanners installed across the country and in many places world-wide, this exciting and valuable technology is available to many people. With nearly one half million patients scanned by the FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI to date, wherein two thirds of these scans were of the spine, I believe that the popularity of the FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI is destined to grow and grow. More and more patients and physicians will demand it for both diagnostic reasons as well as patient satisfaction. At FONAR, we are looking forward to meeting the expanding need for the FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI."

Central Florida Open MRI is located at 2821 U.S. Hwy 27 North, in Sebring, Florida. The telephone number is (863) 402-0938.
