Fla. Court Strikes Down School Vouchers

I can't help but think that's good. Seattle is one of the few cities in the country that is growing both in population and in number of children within the city limits. Yet, public school enrollment is declining. Only 80% of the eligible kids in the city go to public school.....the rest either go to private school or are homeschooled. I now have student taught in three of the city's schools. I would say that in general the teachers are better than the ones I had when I was a kid.......and I went to one of the best jr/middle and high schools in my public school system..........95% of my graduating class went on to college and we always scored high on SATs and National Merit Scholarships.

In general, there may be public schools that are undesirable but they are not nearly as bad as everyone makes them out to be. Public schools are the backbone of a democratic society. If they are allowed to decline, I can't imagine what will happen to that society.

Having said all that, its not all the parents fault. The Seattle school system has gotten a lot of bad press in the past few years and has had a lot of turnover of teachers and upper mgmt. It looks to be poorly run. In fact, the Gates foundation cut off their funding this past year and told the school system to clean up its act.

So it works both ways......parents have to commit and the school system has to be better run.
