LATE ENTRIES ENCOURAGED!!! (& Rules, etc.)
Also, one does not need to make an entry to make a pledge, so play along :-)

Sorry for the absences from SI.

Since this is all for good causes we're pretty loose.
May I suggest Monday, 9 Jan 2006 midnight, as the entry close,
giving the opportunity for one last weekends cogitation.

Rules:
Seems as if theres always a little beginning of the year stuff. This year it seems to have shorting which worked itself out in my absence.

For the future:

Shorting has been allowed at least once in the past, as an incidental amount. Like $0.05 stocks and stocks that trade 100 shares per day usually these things just slide by as insubstantial until a portfolio is submitted that emphasizes a particular investment aspect.

A 100% short portfolio is actually a pretty good contest type entry, i.e. a inverse long shot. It plays well against the field.

However, I think it "games the system" more than the cultural norm here for "fair competition". Plus it has a few accounting and economic quirks that are difficult to handle if it were to evaluated fairly as a "real world" investment option.

So I think it best if we restrict this contest's entries to just long positions in the future.

That said, I think shorting biotechs is a valuable and viable real world strategy (think of the hype about curing cancer in mice, "short all clinical trials", etc.). If SI ever got a portfolio feature that realistically handled short positions we might revisit this topic (in moderation).

In the mean time there is always
Subject 50514
for the triumph of experience over hope :-)

Congratulations to Rick for his 2005 win!!!

Best wishes to all for the New Year.

Regards,
Michael
