re: The only thing that I can think of to explain the Bush behavior re. torture and wiretapping is that over the past 5 years, they have become very used to having their own way; that they believe most people are cream puffs and will fold rather than oppose them; and that, like Coulter, they believe the people are behind them. Let's hope its another example of their arrogance and their need to overreach.

Well, ultimately (if it came to that), they either submit to the rule of law or they call out the military (in their role as Commander In Chief) to enforce their will. And congress has the power (if not the will) to cut their funds to the military.

From all that I've read, I don't think the military would obey Bush if he took that route. At least, I hope not.

I feel like a nut case mentioning these extremes, but I keep seeing that self-righteous religious gleam in Bush's eye, as if he knows better than all of us, and all that came before him.

Sorry but I don't see it as an extreme at all. I think its been considered. I don't know how much of this prosecution of the Libbys and the Abramoffs they will endure. I think Cheney is just another version of a Putin and is biting at the bit to impose martial law. And I don't think Bush is that far behind. And we're not the only people who are worried. A couple of close friends with whom I never discuss politics spoke to me over the holidays and expressed a great deal of distress and frustration over the current situation. They don't know what to do. And I've mentioned before.......my German friends continue to encourage me to consider emigration.

The weird thing about these megalomaniacs is that they are so dismissive of the past. And the US has a hell of a past... a bunch of great Presidents and pragmatic politicians that have helped to make this country great with incremental progress. They always rose to the office, and ideology be damned, did the right thing for Americans.

This is a whole new ball game, IMHO. We're in real trouble... otherwise I wouldn't bother to post here. Lots of better things to do.

Yup. A very new ball game.

Let me tell you....I've mentioned previously that there are two people I do not get along with in my program. I knew one was a rabid Bush fan.......I found out tonite the second one is as well. I am not surprised.............there is this energy they put out from which I instinctively recoil. I have never ever experienced this kind of instant animosity with people. Its almost as if they were wearing masks and they let them drop when Bush got elected.

Watching Letterman and O'Reilly in that clip makes it very clear........there's them and then there is us.
