My kids all start with Spanish. In California it would be ridiculous not to learn it. Unfortunately by next semester by oldest will have taken all the Spanish classes our high school offers (she will be in Spanish 5), and so for her senior year she will have to go to the junior college to continue her Spanish. The schools, imo, should be supporting higher level language study, especially since there are many native speakers here who take Spanish to improve their language ability.

I think we should be teaching all students Spanish as well as English, to start children on the road to being bilingual. We DO have a few experimental elementary schools that do just that. All classes are taught in English and Spanish with the goal of having all children bilingual by the end of elementary school. I think that's excellent, and I'd like to see such programs nationwide.
