Blair says won't step down any time soon, but 'happy' for Brown to succeed him - Tony Blair has moved to quash speculation that he will step down as UK prime minister well before the next general election, due by 2010, but said he is "absolutely happy" for Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown to succeed him

In an interview with The Sun, Blair said he owes it to the electorate who last May returned him to power for a third time to see his political programme through

"The agenda is busy and there are things I feel very, very strongly about and I want to see them through," he told the tabloid daily

Blair said last year that he will not be contesting a fourth general election but did not say when he would make way for a new leader, most likely Brown
