The papers note alcohol related crimes every day in every paper in the country.

Of course there are alcohol related crimes. People who drink too much are impaired and they do careless things. They also do criminal things.

The question is whether or not they do more careless and criminal things now that alcohol is legal than they did when it wasn't. It's hard for me to imagine how or why one is more or less likely to do something stupid like, say, urinating in public or throwing a stone through a window, while coming home from the pub vs. the speakeasy. Individuals are going to do what they're going to do regardless, seems to me. There are some differences on both sides, legal and illegal, and some unknowns, but by and large, alcohol abuse is driven by individuals doing what they do.

So the differential between legal and illegal alcohol is not in individual behavior but in the production, distribution, and sale of product. Clearly there will be less crime in a legal business than in an illegal one. Competing pubs don't have turf wars. Crime by individual under the influence pales besides that inherent to illegal business.

I certainly haven't seen a decrease in alcohol related crime since prohibition was lifted nearly 60-70 years ago. Have you?

I don't remember the days of prohibition. I'm not old enough. Are you? Since I'm not old enough to speak from experience, I can only speak from logic.
