If people have more money and more choices they are likely to consume more.

It's not all carrot, There is a stick to capitalism too.
You can't avoid competition even in areas where you would rather not compete. This is coupled with the the problem that a specialist in that area can usually out compete you if your attentions and desired are elsewhere. This can lead to a lot of uncertainty and distractions.
