Sasol completes China studies

Oil and chemicals group Sasol has completed its pre-feasibility study into coal-to-liquids projects in China, Sasol spokesperson Johann van Rheede told I-Net Bridge on Wednesday.

Sasol was evaluating the findings of the pre-feasibility study and was in talks with potential Chinese partners regarding the project, Van Rheede added.

Sasol conducted the pre-feasibility study regarding two CTL plants in China, one in northern China's Shaanxi province and a similar project in the Ningxia autonomous region.

The Chinese companies interested in the projects are Shenhua Group and Ningxia Coal industrial Group.

The study was conducted into the establishment of two CTL plants with capacity to produce 70 000 to 80 000 barrels of fuel per day. It has been speculated that the two CTP plants could be built at a cost almost R37-billion or $6-billion.

It has been reported that BP had also conducted a study into the projects and that a decision on the winning bids would be made in 2006.

Sasol has identified CTL as an emerging opportunity due to growing imports of crude oil into China and the US and security of fuel supply concerns in both countries.

The US and China have the first and third largest recoverable coal reserves, according to information on Sasol's website.

In September 2004, Sasol signed a memorandum of understanding to undertake a study to evaluate the feasibility of the CTL projects.

Sasol is the world's largest producer of synthetic fuels from coal and 29 percent of South Africa's fuel is supplied from Sasol's synthetic fuel facilities.
