The next round will be more toxic than this round if we don't stop it.

Until the Republicans took over the house in 94, they had spent the years starting with Roosevelt as "tax collectors for the welfare state." The reason we had all the sweetness and light was the the Republicans didn't have an intellectual basis for opposing the left. They were "me tooers." The Dems thought they would rule forever.

The rise of intellectuals on the right, starting with Reagan, was proved to be correct when the the left collapsed after the Soviets went under in 90. Even in academia, Socialism is gone. It remnents are peddled under different names.

Clintons victory in 92 was a fluke. The Republicans were unhappy to have lost, but they were never too happy with '41 anyway. Bubba got in by moving to the right. The right smelled out from the start of the election that the Clintons were corrupt. When it was proven during their time in office to be so, the right's hatred was set. Say what you want about '43, his administration has been the cleanest around for many years.

Bush's election was close because he was a weak candidate. I held my nose when I voted for him the first time. 911 changed my opinion.

So the "cycle of hatred" you are discussing is not really true. When the Republicans were in the minority, they went along with the Dems. Now, the Dems can't stand the thought of having to go along with the Republicans. What we really have, finally, is a real two party system. The Dems never had to face this before, and they can't stand it.
