Republican Lawmaker DeLay Says He's Quitting as Majority Leader bloomberg.com Jan. 7 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Congressman Tom DeLay said he will permanently step down as House Majority leader today in a letter to Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert that was e-mailed to reporters. Delay, a Texas Republican, said he will seek reelection and retain his seat on the House Appropriations Committee. Delay said he will continue to work to clear his name ``of the baseless charges leveled against me.'' Delay faces money-laundering charges in Texas, and a guilty plea Jan. 3 by Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff threatens to draw Delay and other lawmakers into a federal corruption probe. ``The job of majority leader and the mandate of the Republican majority are too important to be hamstrung, even for a few months, by personal distractions,'' Delay wrote to Hastert. The Republicans, which control the U.S. presidency and both houses of Congress, face midterm elections in November. All 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are up for grabs and a third of the U.S. Senate.
