I'm guessing there are at least as many versions of True Islam as there are of True Christianity. Just as our own institutions of freedom and democracy have successfully moderated the worst tendencies of our Judeo-Christian inheritance, we can expect freedom and democracy to counter and ameliorate the worst expressions of Islam.

The article I was responding to had some lengthy descriptions of analysis by Pope Benedict on this issue. I am certainly not in his league when it comes to understanding Islam, but what he says seems consistent with what I have read about the nature of Islam.

In a nutshell -- the Jewish Bible (Old Testament) and Christian Bible (New Testament) are said to have been revealed to mankind by God -- it is accepted that the humans who transcribed what God told them were flawed and possibly did not fully comprehend what God revealed to them. Also, over time there were errors in transcription. Thus, analysis and interpretation is allowed.

Not so for the Koran. It is said to have come directly from God, and to be perfect, flawless, no errors, no interpretation needed or allowed.

Without analysis and interpretation, no amelioration.
