Please understand the Excel file(s) .... More people have PM'd and I have forward them the FIRST Excel file. This FIRST Excel file simply organizes data submitted by each contestant. As best as possible it contains all recent updates. The name of the file they received is: RonStk2006Rev2.xls ..... I suspect people will be happy to have this data AND disappointed. At the end of the day what folks really want to do is (a) YANK ACTUAL DATA (b) have each contestants results presented (c) and have it all (thats 40 contestants) on one single page. This second Excel file will do the above. It is almost BUT NOT QUITE complete. This file: (a) YANKS DATA (from MSN Money) (b) and has a programming logic that will either (1) calculate a single contestants portfolio or (2) blow thru all portfolios. This SECOND FILE should be industrial strength and 'good to go' by around Thursday or Friday. If you don't see the vision - here it is: Without doing ANY typing you will be able to update any or all portfolios every MINUTE - if you wanted to. LEGAL DISCUSSION When this second file is ready I will email it to those folks who request it SUBJECT TO THE FOLLOWING DISCUSSION AND AGREEMENT. There are some DOWNSIDES to all of this that should be understood. (1) I am committed to a certain programming logic - i.e. I cannot at this time change my programming logic and retreive from a different data source. (2) You will need certain thingies already existing on your PC. Thingies (a) You should have an XP Operating System with SERVICE PACK 2 installed. Said another way - have ALL Microsoft Security patches. If you don't know how to get this stuff goto TOOLS -> WINDOWS UPDATE on your IE Menu. If you don't do this you put yourself at risk and you have been at risk. (b) You will need Microsoft Office (Excel) version 2000 or 2002 . I don't know how the program would behave in 2003 and it WILL NOT RUN under Excel 97. (c) Finally, understand what you are doing because I need to cover my own ass. All the Microsoft Office products contain an underlying programming language called Visual Basic for Applications or more commonly VBA. (If you did a google on Excel +VBA - you will get the picture) Well - VBA is a good thing AND VBA can be a VERY BAD THING. Some one could write MALICIOUS VBA code that could ruin your PC - or ROB your email addresses, etc. Should someone request this file, install it, and just coincidentally their PC goes BOOM .... I do not want to be held liable ..... So to protect against some unforseen event .... I need some type of legal jargon that in effect says - you take it as is and if anything goes BOOM - I am not liable. Lastly, I could hide all the VBA code. But should you then forward the file to a friend who was also a committed hacker he could easily break the Excel password protection, modify my code, and go do whatever bad things he/she wanted to to the original code. I'm hoping any lawyers on the board might offer up a sentence or too on this matter. If any of the above CONERNS YOU then do not get the file. To those conversant in Excel - look at it this way. You will see Combo Boxes, Buttons and Named Ranges in a Workbook. You will be able to WALK THRU the code and see whats its doing. If you have high school kids taking any classes in VBA or any programming language they might get a kick out of it and/or write it much better. Finally, the end goal here is to simply free us from the tyranny of having to type anything .... and just getting a timely answer on whose doing what ... If enough people take this file and use it - I can just lurk which is when the best learning happens ... regards, John EDIT Forgot - the file will have 5 ROLL_YOUR_OWN portfolios built in. They can be as big or small as you require.
