I would be very surprised if there wasn't a classified government project somewhere working on how to data mine effectively.

Remember a few years back, a program called Total Information Awareness (TIA)?

Its scope made most folks uncomfortable and when it was discovered that pardoned felon John Poindexter was in charge, the project was derided to the point that the govt supposedly terminated it.

I am certain that the plug was pulled and that we will never, ever hear of it again. NOT!
