Memory Bulletin: NAND sets growth record Mark LaPedus EE Times (01/10/2006 4:36 PM EST) HALF MOON BAY, Calif. — The NAND-based flash memory segment is the fastest growing “major” semiconductor market in history, according to Semico Research Corp.
Until last year, the NOR-based flash memory market was larger than NAND, according to the research firm. But the explosion in camera-based cellular phones, digital cameras, USB drives and other products has propelled the NAND market to new and amazing heights.
In fact, it was a record year for NAND, which saw nearly 300 percent bit growth in 2005, according to the firm.
The NAND-based flash memory market is projected to grow from $11 billion in 2005 to $13.7 billion in 2006, said Jim Feldhan, president of Semico, in a presentation at the Industry Strategy Symposium (ISS) event here on Tuesday (Jan. 10),
In other memory markets, NOR is expected to recover after a downturn. DRAMs are projected to by 20.8 percent in 2006, he said. |
