DRAM glut seen in '06, says Dataquest (I'm kind of lost - glut and shortage at the same time; sounds like a "typical" LaPledus - think before you print)

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. — The semiconductor industry is expected to see decent growth in 2006, but there are some possible red flags on the horizon, including a DRAM glut, warned an analyst with Gartner/Dataquest Inc.
Klaus Rinnen, an analyst with Gartner/Dataquest, predicts 7.6 percent growth for ICs in 2006. Capital spending, however, will fall 0.4 percent this year, he said.
“The sky is not all blue,” Rinnen said during a presentation here.
There are several issues in the marketplace, which could stunt the growth this year. One of those issues is that overall “empty shell” capacity is at a historical low, he said.
There also could be too much capacity in the DRAM industry, causing a possible oversupply situation in DRAMs in the second half of 2006, he said.
There are other ominous signs, including an ongoing polysilicon shortage and a tightening supply for substrates in packaging, he added. |
