I am pretty sure that both XM and Sirius are LEOS, XM has two satellites and Sirius has 3. This leads slightly better reception for Sirius in the canyons of NY and elsewhere since they have two satellites that can hit a receiver most of the time while XM only has one of its 2 that can hit a receiver at any time.

There may be something about the configuration of the LEO orbits that still makes it hard to reach NZ - I don't know about that.
