I think the avalanches in Europe come off of steeper mts that are usually not connected to ski areas. I remember a few towns that were wiped out but not ski areas. Not to say that you can't have avalanches within ski area boundaries. According to their website, there are 23 avalanche areas within the ski area where I ski. They've made a science out of controlling avalanches in ski areas.
