I was thinking today how if one believes we are in an interminable, unwinnable (in the sense you can't define victory) war that justifies dismantling large parts of the Constitution de facto permanently, there is no room for a more discerning argument.

Everything is seen in light of a war against the enemy, extraconstitutional measures are justified in perpetuity, and the government that conservatives distrusted and blamed for most of the nation's ills since the 1960's is now a trustworthy, infallible defender of freedom that can do whatever it likes, while we sleep well knowing they will only act in our best interest against the bad guys, and never hurt the innocent in the process.

That's the perch I see lots of people on. Since I find it irrational, I don't see a reason to debate the fine points. Sorry. I am not comfortable there. I am not ready to say the government can do whatever it likes in the name of intelligence. That's where we differ, and it won't change.
