Graham Was Apologizing for Democrats When Mrs. Alito Broke Down

Media Blog
Stephen Spruiell Reporting

Earlier I posted to the Corner this video -

corner.nationalreview.com

- featuring CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Jeff Greenfield and Jeffrey Toobin discussing the Alito hearings — specifically the instance when Mrs. Alito started crying and left the room. The only portion of the transcript I posted was this bit from Jeff Greenfield:

<<< The temptation for some of these witnesses must be enormous, particularly if it’s a more hostile situation, to just lean over the table and just let some of the senators know what you’re really thinking about their intellectual capacity, their hypocrisy. If they attack him for, I don’t know, being the member of a club, to say “Well really? Where’d you spend your time? How many restrictive clubs have you golfed at?” They can’t do that. It’s not part of the ethic, um… I have a lot of sympathy for these people no matter where they come from on the ideological scale. >>>

But several e-mailers noted that earlier in the clip, from the way Wolf Blitzer introduced the segment, you would have thought that Sen. Lindsey Graham was involved in the personal attacks that caused Mrs. Alito to break down. In fact, Graham was merely cataloguing the accusations that Democrats had thrown at Alito throughout the hearings, and apologizing to Alito for the way he'd been treated. Wolf should have made that more clear.

Here's a video clip from MSNBC where you can hear Graham's emotional apology.

I'm with Greenfield — how did Alito stop himself from flipping Kennedy the bird today?
