That is similar to my thinking. If we developed fringe parties who would associate with them. If Teddy Kennedy, Michael Moore, moron.org, Robert Altman and Babs formed thier own party would anyone let them into a power sharing agreement? Look at Err America for the answer to that.

If a group held the intellectual and idealogical middle ground then they could choose who to ally themselves with according to which part(ies) were willing to moderate their government behaviors.

Would our current structure of Committee assignments be able to accommodate?
