I'm missing something. How does tracking down the owner of the random words constitute listening without a warrant? You listened to the random words, which is OK. Before you tap that person's line you get a warrant, which is OK. How does tracking down the line and its owner from the snippet "make an end run around warrants"? Simply because you subsequently learn the identity of the speaker of the snippet that you already heard before you were required to have a warrant?
