to erect an anti-wetback fence along the Mexican border(*), Gus I think there is a bit more to this border fence than anyone realizes. It is not the immigrants who are crossing to find dollars that are the problem. During the Christmas holiday season a friend of mine left to join their family in Texas. They arrived to find the entire family in tears as a member of the extended family had been kidnapped. In this case a family from Texas had invited their entire family to a celebration dinner that would be held in favorite restaurant located on the Mexican side of the border. A teenage boy the nephew of the person holding the dinner had invited a friend his age who happened to be from a wealthy family to attend the dinner with him. The family all were seated in the restaurant with the exclusion of the boy who waited in the parking lot for his friend to arrive. His friend drove up parked his SUV. As the boys were walking to the restaurant two thugs carrying shotguns abducted both boys. This occurred in broad day light in front of many people. Not only did they take the boys they came back and got the SUV. I sat in shock hearing this story and my immediate question was why didn't someone call the police. The answer I received was there are over two thousand of these type of incidents that happen each year. The Mexican police are part of the operation so the people have no where to go for help. Ransom is requested for the return of the person taken and if you can't pay the ransom chances are you will not get your relative back. In this case the teenager that was taken from my friends family would have little hope as this family did not have a great deal of extra cash. This boys only hope lied in his friends family and an Uncle who said he might be able to get funds from financing his law practice. Apparently these actions are common and not published in the papers. The grief carried by this family is not head line news. People who have created dollars now find that members of their family are kidnap targets. The result is many wealthy families are fleeing Mexico for Florida. These people are capable of dollar creation is is safe they are not capable of making their families. It is a terrible drain for Mexico as they loose those that create jobs. The story upset me so that my first thought was we are at war in the wrong area. I don't want to go into the gory details of how a parent can find a finger of a child delivered in an envelope to their door. These are people who are so afraid of the police that they have no where to go. They feel this ring is so well run that is is part of the political sytem of Mexico. After hearing this story which is true and seeing the anguish in the eyes of the teller I thought about borders. I thought about all the people who have come from those borders and become successful in this country. It is not the people who want to cross the border for work that are causing the problem, it is those who find an easy way to take away what they have worked for that is the problem. This family did not know that crossing the border to eat would put anyone at risk. As a child I too crossed a border a different one but my family did so for exactly the same reason a wonderful place to eat and spend a weekend. My thoughts then turned to all these wonderful people who are living on American side of the border which is steps away from the other side. Many cross the border on a regular base How can we protect those who live here from the corrupt that is coming from there? Border patrol seems to be the only solution we have. I know for a fact we have a program the name escapes me that is one offered to our students. This is an eco program where students spend an academic year studying the desert and in return receive financial aid for U. These students are told part of their duties will be is to assist migrant workers who are coming across from Mexico to the San Diego area. Our students are instructed to aid these people in any way they can.
