As bad as that is, at least there was a court involved in the process. What is contemplated with warrantless spying via the phone (or other methods) is police powers unchecked by the courts. At least these men had the safeguard of the courts- which I will grant you, is imperfect, but at LEAST they are a safeguard to zealots run amok.

I'm not justifying the incarceration of those men in any way- I hope that's clear.
