Your postscript and the fact that women mature earlier than men can be extended back to the Flynn Argument.

Through out the 20th century the level of insecticides, plastics, dioxins have increased. This has brought on earlier and earlier maturation of girls. Many cases of fully developed breasts and menstruation in girls age 7-8-9 are documented and the prevalence of this is greatly increasing.

Are the Flynn Effect statistics divided by sex?

Early maturation would lead to higher IQ scores in younger girls though it would tend to decrease IQ when they are older.

Again as IQ is tested almost entirely in the sub 25 age group this could be a significant factor.
