TOKYO, Sept 17 (Reuter) - Intel Corp said on Wednesday that it has launched its first 64-megabit flash memory chip, which has a capacity twice that of conventional chips.
Intel said in a statement it plans to start volume shipments of 64-megabit chips in the first quarter of 1998.

The new chip employs multi-level cell technology, which enables multiple bits of information to be stored in one transistor, Intel said.

The new technology will help to cut the production costs of the chips, while enabling production of larger capacity digital cameras, Intel said.
Intel said it also expects large demand for the chip in network products, such as LAN (local area network) switches.
