That's all interesting. Particularly this sentence resonates with me: '"I do believe it's becoming a hybrid form," says Gornick of recent memoirs, citing luminary author W.G. Sebald, whose books, a mix of memory and history and observation and image, strike many critics as the wave of the future." I am about to finish up a coauthored book (purely nonfiction) and then I hoped to possibly get some time to start my second "real" book (I consider a real book one that is entirely creative). And I had planned it to be just what Gornick says of Sebald...with a little bit of science and the cosmos thrown in (or maybe a lot). So maybe I really am a creature of my times and didn't even know it. BUT I just call that "creative nonfiction" or "literary nonfiction." I think Mary Karr, and Frank McCourt, are artists. Those are not mere "memoirs." They are works of art. Proof is also Mary Karr is a good poet.
