I bought an multi-function ink jet. I think it made sense for me. I don't print a lot, and even if the total cost is eventually higher then a color laser multifuction device you have to consider the time value of money. The laser would have cost a lot more up front. The interest costs, or lost investment return on that cost adds up.

I spend close to 2,000+ dollars for ink per year for my office printer (photos printed in draft, not on glossy paper). I print thousands and thousands of documents per year on the laser, and only change the toner 2 times per year (160 dollars).

With that high level of printing most ink jets don't make sense for you. But most people print less than that (and I probably print less (at least at home, where I am paying for the ink) than most people.
