Nice piece. I've read the Jimmy McDonough book and it fleshed out all that stuff pretty well (it's excellent on the Gloom Trilogy years; "Time Fades Away-Tonight's the Night-On The Beach" period and is worth a read if only for that). It's also interesting that both he and Johnny Rotten survived bacterial menningits as children. Unlike all the other stars of his era, he's still doing it and it still sounds fresh.....
