Byrd has stood for civil rights for 50 years. Back in the 1940's though in the south being a member of the KKK was not unusual, though clearly it was wrong. real southerners understand that Byrd is no racist and never has been. Unlike rightwing Republians he has always defended civil rights. Jesse Helms types did not.
