Those who supported Lester Maddox and the boyz were accepting the priority of states rights and individual rights over the equal protection of discriminated against black folks.

I would say rather that they were illegally attempting to apply state power against individual rights (in this case rights that are both natural and constitutional rights).

Edit - Its a shame that the cause of applying proper and constitutionally required limits to federal power was politically weakened by the inappropriate application of it to protect state power against individuals in ways that where often contrary to the constitutional rights of individuals, and even when they where not unconstitutional where often repellent.
