I understand that the communities who invested big time in a Lewis and Clark celebration lost out because the expected tourists just didn't come. Whether this is an artifact of the price of oil or just indifference, I don't know.

Perhaps it is all for the best. I really don't relish the idea of fighting crowds when I visit the Lewis and Clark sites.

It is a time for solitude.

When I walked on the Trail at its most pristine segment, the Lolo Trail, I could almost hear the clatter of their horses' hooves and the rattle of their gear.
