I don't see how we get to decide anything much. Seems to me like the ball is in Iran's court- unless we want to invade, or bomb them- and talk about blowing it in the ME, that would sure be the way. That would guarantee that Iraq, and the rest of the ME, would swing to the radical side. I could imagine that sort of thing being an even bigger recruiting tool than the Iraqi invasion was. It's not a question of ignoring it- it's a question of not being omnipotent and omniscient. That's a realization some people in the US have problems with.
