MOSCOW, January 17 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow energy systems are working to provide customers with heat as the weather temperatures plunged in Russia's capital to a bitter minus 27 degrees Celsius (-16.6 degrees Fahrenheit) Monday night, a spokesman for the Moscow regional utility Mosenergo said Tuesday.

"A peak in energy consumption was registered, but the system reliably provided Muscovites with heat and light," the spokesman said.

Weather forecasters say the cold spell is expected to last several days, with temperatures dropping to as low as minus 34 degrees Celsius by the end of the week.

The sudden freeze came on the back of several days of relatively mild weather, with temperatures hovering only just below zero degrees Celsius.

Unified Energy System CEO Anatoly Chubais said earlier that heat supplies to some consumers might be restricted if the weather grew too cold, but later added that this would not affect residential buildings.

Mosenergo also said in a statement that it had stocked up on fuel and was well equipped to deal with the dip in temperatures.
