Len.. you know something.. I think this is the first time we've ever agreed on something.. It's a starting point, wouldn't you say??

Yes.. it's the nature of mankind (I'm a Hobbesian) to accumulate power and wealth for themselves to the detriment of others. And it's part and parcel to politics, whether Republicans are in charge, or Democrats.

But I'm also a pragmatist who recognizes that these powerful elements will never be kept totally in check by any political or legal system, because those systems are only as effective when people hold politicians and leaders accountable for their actions, and many of us abdicate that responsibility to others. Thus, politicians will get away with shenanigans from time to time. However, I believe eventually they will be held accountable by the people who elected them, so long as the apparatus of free and fair elections is not impeded, or the constitution usurped by some megalo-maniac trying to upset our current governmental balance of power (executive, legislative, and judicial).

Yes.. we'd better watch our own steps.. But we're human.. our leaders are human.. and our soldiers are human. We all make mistakes.. And some people exploit our system for their own benefit. And we must correct those mistakes, and punish those who deliberately seek to enrich themselves unfairly by circumventing laws and social norms.
