If I'd said I was a sewer worker you'd have found an example of someone who has to eat sewage for a living.

BWAHAHA - aww come on Grace - dont be so hard on me. Still in the age of globalism - there are lower caste in india that still have a long way to go to even get up to our poorest. I went to see louie anderson over the holidays - he made a good joke - we are ready to send all those muslim/arab types packing back to their homeland - unless we are about to see our doctor - then he said what a relief - you know that guy studied hard to get out of that shit he was living in back home and become a doctor here - he said he wont see an american doctor that slacked his way through college - but wants the arab/indian one that busted his ass to get out of poverty - hehe.

You don't get it, if two people like myself and my husband can be well off in America, pretty much anyone can be.

Some people are hard pressed to cut the negative influences in their life Grace - even if they know it is bad for them - things are not always so black and white. I partly gave up a successful career at a fortune 5 because my mom needed my help when dad got on the drugs and women. I love my dad - but financially that cost me dearly - I should have let him descend into ruination and death if money was all I was concerned with. My sisters made that choice - cold and heartless women they are - hehe.

We started rock bottom with little or no advantages. People stay poor in America because they make poor choices over and over.

Your husband gets a drug habit - do you divorce him tomorrow and never talk to him again and cut that dead end? Or do you lose money and time trying to help him?

This goes for high income people who blow their incomes just as well for those who live on 6k a year.

I wish my world was so simple.

BTW my husband doesn't build houses he builds hospitals and schools, his job is far from "clean" or safe. My lab job was far from "clean". Considering the amount of chemicals I was exposed to day in and day out it is amazing that I'm still in reasonably decent health.

I am thankful you were not injured - it is hard to watch someone die from cancer.

One of my best friends from college and a co worker at IBM worked with his dad tearing down and re building hotels and such in the south east when he was younger - he was diagnosed with lung cancer because of this - he had to leave IBM and go into expensive medical treatments for cancer - he blew through his limited insurance - his parents sold most of their assets and thier beautiful home - they came to me and to other of his friends and family to help donate anyway we could - I had my own troubles with my family and did not have much money to offer at that time - he died after a long and disturbing bout with cancer - leaving his parents financially ruined - his dad was a marine officer before the construction business - mother a head nurse at a hospital - they will never recover they went into so much debt I fear - they chose to spend all thier savings and retirement trying to save thier son who died anyways - your simple views of the world that ANYONE can make it in america irks me - the world is not so simple.

BTW my two retired tenants with yearly incomes of $8400 and $7200 also shop at Wegman's when they can get a ride out there. It is cheaper than their local "discount" supermarket. A sign that a standard of living is rising is that even the poorest citizens have access to what would have been a luxury ten-fifteen years ago,

I consider myself rich - I dont have access to wegmans - not one within 1000 miles of me I believe. The poor of the NE are far richer than even middle class of many other areas perhaps.

things like cell phones, computers and internet access or a grocery store that is a bonafide cornicopia.

Hehe - see my indian friend in oregon - a real ladies man - he told me almost 2 decades ago - the net gonna be bad for our sex life shades - when the ladies can get on yahoo chat and find 500 suckers to buy them dinner - we will be marginalized - his prediction was correct for the south ga towns where he had reigned as a king - hehe. I am poorer because of the net in certain measurements.
