Hi Darleen:

I doubt the British Commonwealth has much to do with Canada remaining independent. More important are the 250 years or so of building a country that is not the US. Most of the original settlers along the north shore of Lake Ontario and the southern borders of the maritime Provinces came from the US after the Revolution. These are the people who set Canada on its course. Not becoming a part of the US has been written into most relevant Canadian laws, business practices and shows up in inter generational attitudes.

Apart from history watching CNN ABC CBS and NBC daily gives a clear view of present areas of differences.

Canadians don't care about the religion of their politicians and no Canadian politician would mention the topic. Slavery was eliminated in Canada in 1794 and is not a topic and neither are reparations. Federal rights Vs Provincial rights are clearly spelled in the Constitution--not a continuing issue. Abortion is seldom mentioned anywhere, health care is better, readily available to all (although somewhat slower). Wire tapping is not an issue,: Canada is not so far a terrorist target: the Canadian financial situation is much better than the US disaster chronicled here daily.

Public and high school education is still better than the US. The recent report of 46% functional illiteracy in Detroit is a mind blower. Crime is relativity non existent in Canada--even with recent murders in Toronto

Why would Canadians want to join the US?
