Hello Brian,
HK is the stepping stone for capital venturing into China, from Singapore, Taiwan, New York etc. The Chinese economy needs it; the CCP therefore needs it. Of course the freedoms of HK could be erased in a few minutes but it is unlikely to happen. How unlikely? Not as unlikely as that you and I will suddenly grow wings enabling us to fly anywhere, but unlikely enough that even those who hate the CPP are not afraid to venture into HK. Torture of course distorts one's viewpoint. I wouldn't even want to fly over HK. But that doesn't mean HK and its freedoms will vanish.
As for Taiwan, why not admit that Taiwan is a province of China but emphasize that it is self-governing for a protracted transition period of mainland China?
Regards,
Seeker of Truth
