Hi Etch,

Axcelis atmittedly came to single wafer processing as the switch to 300mm was already going on.

New to their offerings are the Optima HD,MD and HE.

The first HD was just shipped this quarter.

Key differences between Acls and Vsea are spot beam vs ribbon beam.

Axcelis says they can tilt their ion implanter head and that has advantages - they also claim better productivity and less contamination.

There claim is the ribbon (Varian's)is much harder to control as it applies to a bigger area (makes sense).

It is really hard to say - truth is I don't know.

I liken it to making a walkaround presentation on a Ford truck vs a Chevy truck - eack has product differentiation.

Who has the market share should unfold.

Varian is established on single wafer, but it just could be that Axcelis has taken longer to come out with a better mouse trap.

Both are great companies and Axcelis is admittedly the underdog with far less of a balance sheet.

Acls has a book value of 4.40 and I've taken a gamble they'll show and do well.

It really lools to me like they both should do what KLA and Tencor did - merge and make a lot of money.GG

Either way 300 mm will usher in a large need for both of these companies products.

Single wafer is the key - it helps control excess production and has unbelieveable yield rates.

Batch is dead.

Bob
