"China and Iran are both alike in terms of the use of nationalism to keep folks in line. Iran is an economic mess."

Nationalism only matters once there is a chicken in one's pot. If Iran cannot feed its people then it will implode economically. They are exporting IEDs to Iraq, and I doubt if they are being paid much for them. They export Unmanned Aerial Reconnaissance Vehicles to Syria. Due to their drug smuggling activities, Hamas terrorists might have more resources to pay than the terrorists in Iraq.

Iran also has provided substantial financial support to Lebanese and Palestinian terrorists for some time. If not for the sale of oil, their economy might be in a shambles.

Economies which derive a substantial portion of their output on resource extraction tend to be less free than diverse economies.
