Apple profit surges on iPod sales

marketwatch.com

<<...Consumers snapped up 14 million iPod devices during the holiday quarter, and Apple has now sold more than 42 million iPods since late 2001. The groundbreaking product has transformed Apple from a niche PC maker into the leading purveyor of digital media.

"The numbers look good," said Shaw Wu, Apple analyst with American Technology Research. "The earnings show the operating leverage is still strong."

Apple also sold 1.25 million Macintosh computers during the quarter, a figure that was up 20% from the year-earlier figure. Apple is in the process of transitioning its Mac line to Intel Corp. processors, and it expects to have all of its PCs running on Intel chips by the end of this year.

Apple issued a second-quarter profit forecast of 38 cents a share on $4.3 billion in revenue. Excluding 4 cents a share for stock-based compensation expenses, Apple expects to earn 42 cents a share. That outlook fell well short of a Wall Street-estimated profit of 48 cents a share on $4.67 billion in sales.

Wu said the forecast was "a bit of a surprise," but that it was the prudent thing to do, given that Apple has had such a huge stock and profit run over the last year.

"I think they had to reset the expectations a bit," Wu said. "I'm not particularly surprised, and the market will probably show some negative reaction."...>>
