If consumption drops, who will be buying the goods at the higher prices such that it is worthwhile to keep them on the shelves at those prices, not to mention continuing to import them ?

We will....US citizens. We will pay the higher prices for all the necessities, default on most of the debt, and scale back our standard of living to handle the rest of the shortfall caused by no credit and living beyond our means. The cost of food, fuel, and every other necessity will skyrocket as the USD plummets. The costs of discretionary items will be mixed with many of them disappearing from the shelves as they don't move fast enough to warrant the carrying costs.

At least this is one of the scenarios I see as being possible.
