I think the comparison to Nixon is flawed. Nixon ran again and won after his loss eight years earlier, yes. But his message in 1968 was cynical and fundamentally dishonest: "I have a secret plan to end the Vietnam War."

I think there is another model for Al Gore, though not a native one. Another politican spent several years in the political wilderness, often ridiculed when he wasn't being ignored. That didn't stop him from speaking truth to power, forcefully and eloquently reminding his nation of political and diplomatic dangers and mistakes.

And after his years in the wilderness, Winston Churchill saved his country. All in all, I think Winnie is a much better model than Tricky Dick.
