Among certain groups here in the States, there is a lot of fear of Muslims. It might help if they knew some Muslims but the Muslim populations are small and isolated.

Isolated perhaps, but the numbers I recall indicate there are more Muslims in the US than Jews. For some reason I think there are ~3 million US Jews and ~6 million US Muslims - don't know where that came from but that's my memory. If it's correct, the size of the US Muslim population is no excuse for the "fear of Muslims" you describe.

You often read in the papers out here about how the West "doesn't understand" Islam etc., etc. If it's true, I lay the blame for that squarely on Muslims. They've failed to make themselves understood.
