Electricity supplies restricted in Moscow as demand soars

MOSCOW, January 19 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow's electricity generators have had to cut back supplies to some of the city's consumers Thursday from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. GMT, a senior executive of power giant Unified Energy System (UES) said.

Power demand in Moscow has soared this week, as temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit) have engulfed the capital, prompting residents to turn to electric heaters to combat the cold.

"We had to impose restrictions for the Moscow electricity distribution system," UES board member Andrei Trapeznikov said.

The peak load on the city's power system hit a new record high Wednesday. But peak load on the system Thursday morning exceeded Wednesday's peak by 200 megawatts, and was likely to go on to set further records, Trapeznikov said. "We are expecting it to grow further this evening," he said.

Moscow's heat distribution system was already working at its limit, he said.

The restrictions on power supplies are likely to affect only commercial and industrial customers, with officials having repeatedly said that residential customers and key services will continue to enjoy full supplies. Some businesses have already had supplies cut back to only a fraction of their normal levels this week as utilities attempt to balance supply and demand.

Trapeznikov said the decision to restrict supplies was taken by a joint ad hoc committee made up of UES representatives and city officials.

The historical average temperature for Moscow in January is between -16°C and -9°C.
